The one-year anniversary of Tennessee Vols legend Pat Summitt’s death headlines the Volunteers news for Wednesday, June 28, 2017.

We are now one year removed from the tragedy of Tennessee Vols legend Pat Summitt’s death. And she still remains arguably the greatest icon in the history of the program.

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top, it’s only fitting that today would include at least a bit of Lady Vols news for the future on top of the coverage surrounding her.

And another former coach in Phillip Fulmer is also generating some news. There’s some football recruiting to get to as well.

But let’s start with the big story of the day.

Pat Summitt remembered on death anniversary – University of Tennessee-Knoxville website

Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt died exactly one year ago today. One of the most towering figures in sports history, the school made sure to officially recognize her on the anniversary of her death.

"As much as she pushed her players to win on the court, Summitt, who earned a bachelor’s degree from UT Martin and a master’s degree from UT Knoxville, also insisted on excellence in the classroom.Every Lady Vol who completed her eligibility at Tennessee under Summitt’s watch graduated, and the coach remained a mentor to her former players as they went on to careers in basketball and other ventures."

Phillip Fulmer comments on the state of the Tennessee VolsThe Swain Event 

In an interview on The Swain Event Tuesday, Phillip Fulmer talked about his new role with the Tennessee Vols and the importance of the program coming together. He addressed that it’s happening and also mentioned how the division hurt the athletic department at the turn of the decade.

"“We kind of melted from the inside for a while there, to be honest with you. All of a sudden there was no direct line of communication from the president to the AD to the coaches. Everyone had their own agendas. We had four presidents in six years. There’s no leadership and a lot of infighting and things that happened.”"

Lady Vols SEC opponents released for 2017-2018 – UTSports

The Tennessee Lady Vols’ SEC opponents for 2017-2018 were released on Tuesday, and they will play the defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks twice. However, they caught a break by only playing the other top teams from last year once, which include the Kentucky Wildcats, Missouri Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs. But they do play Kentucky and Missouri on the road.

"In addition to the match-ups at USC, A&M and Vandy, Tennessee hits the road for contests at Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, LSU and Missouri.Tennessee went 20-12 (10-6 SEC/5th) last season, its fifth under head coach Holly Warlick. The Lady Vols faced the nation’s fifth-toughest schedule, picking up victories over top-10 foes South Carolina, Mississippi State, Notre Dame and Stanford along the way."

Tennessee Vols commits, targets head to Oregon – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

Nike’s The Opening finals in Beaverton, Ore. is set to begin. And Tennessee football commitments and targets are headed out there for the event.

"Dozens of players who have received scholarship offers from Tennessee, including two of the Vols’ current commitments for the 2018 class, will be among the dozens of highly ranked prospects arriving in Beaverton, Ore., beginning Wednesday for Nike’s The Opening Finals and the Elite 11 finals."
