2018 Tennessee football quarterback commitments

1. Michael Penix Jr., 6’2″ 177 pounds; Tampa Bay Tech; Tampa, Fla.

The first commitment of the 2018 Tennessee football recruiting class at quarterback, Michael Penix Jr. is a pure drop-back passer. Penix committed to the Vols back in April and was the MVP of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp in Orlando.

A four-star on Rivals, Penix ranks No. 12 across the country at his position and No. 58 nationally. All evidence points to him being ready to go much earlier than other quarterbacks, however his ceiling may not be as high. Still, the Vols got him to choose them over the Arizona Wildcats and Oregon Ducks.

A national prospect, Penix is a great drop-back grab for Jones and the Tennessee football staff.

2. Adrian Martinez; 6’3″ 198 pounds; Clovis West High School; Fresno, Calif.

The sexy commitment, Adrian Martinez is the Jarrett Guarantano of this class. He committed to the Vols a month after Michael Penix Jr. did, and despite drawing interest from the USC Trojans after his commitment, he still remains committed to Tennessee football.

A four-star on Rivals, Martinez is a dual-threat quarterback who already has great size. He is the No. 8 ranked player at his position nationally and the No. 22 ranked player in the state of California overall. Nationally, without positions, Martinez is the No. 158 ranked player.

Tennessee football has had success with California quarterbacks in the past, but he’d be the first dual-threat from the state to see action with the Vols. However, considering the style of play out West, he should also have drop-back experience, which gives him a huge ceiling.
