Tennessee Vols morning report: Currie’s first 100 days, football JUCO commitment

Tennessee Vols athletic director John Currie’s first 100 days and another football commitment lead the Volunteers news for Friday, July 7, 2017.

Get ready! This is the final weekend before SEC Media Days begins, and the de facto preseason for the Tennessee Vols’ athletic year of 2017-2018 starts.

But ahead of that, we have a lot of updates to bring you.

The Friday before that coincides with the end of John Currie’s first 100 days as the new Tennessee athletic director.

In addition to that, other news on Rocky Top includes another big commitment for the football program. There’s also an update on the UT athletic budget and another one regarding the Lady Vols’ upcoming schedule.

But let’s start with Currie’s reflection.

John Currie reflects on 100 days as UT A.D. – Mike Strange, Knoxville News Sentinel

John Currie was a controversial hire for Vols athletic director, and his first 100 days on the job have been nothing short of eventful. Those events include two new coaching hires and the return of Phillip Fulmer.

"Returning after eight years at Kansas State, Currie has hired Tony Vitello to coach baseball and Chris Woodruff for men’s tennis. He has brought in two key members of his administrative team, Reid Sigmon as chief operating officer and Kurt Gulbrand as head of development. And he worked toward Phillip Fulmer’s appointment as special assistant to the president."

Junior college DE commits to Vols – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

Three-star defensive end Dorian Gerald joined Tennessee football’s 2018 recruiting class after committing to the Vols on Thursday evening. His commitment only boosts the Vols’ class ranking, which was already in the Top 5.

"Gerald gave Tennessee its 17th known commitment for the 2018 class and its fifth from a defensive lineman, addressing one of Tennessee’s most glaring needs with one of the nation’s top junior-college prospects at the position."

Lady Vols’ non-conference schedule set – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols women’s basketball team has its non-conference opponents set for the 2017-2018 season. The Lady Vols face four Power Five opponents plus the Marquette Golden Eagles, who are on the level of a Power Five team.

"Notre Dame, Stanford and Texas headline a challenging non-conference Tennessee women’s basketball schedule released by sixth-year Lady Vol Head Coach Holly Warlick on Thursday.Tip times and television network assignments will be available at a later date when the information is approved for release."

Tennessee Vols athletic budget – USA TODAY 

Tennessee’s athletic budget is still one of the top budgets in college athletics. With revenue of over $140 million, the Vols rank No. 9 nationally and No. 5 in the SEC behind the Texas A&M Aggies, Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers and Florida Gators.
