Tennessee Vols morning report: Defensive line updates, Todd Kelly Jr. on Shaq Wiggins
Updates on the Tennessee Vols defensive line and Todd Kelly Jr. on Shaq Wiggins lead the Volunteers news for Monday, July 24, 2017.
It’s the final Monday before the Tennessee Vols officially begin their preseason practices. And of course, that means we are loaded with football updates to bring you.
As we get set to bring you today’s news on Rocky Top, it heavily involves the defensive line. This includes the new coach at that position and injury updates for one particular player.
But there’s also news surrounding the secondary. Simply put, today’s updates surround the Tennessee Vols defense.
And let’s start with the coaching on the line.
Brady Hoke living up to expectations – Mike Griffith, SEC Country
Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones revamped the staff this offseason, and one of his most notable hires was Brady Hoke. The defensive line coach has already made a huge impact on the team and the unit, and he’s clearly living up to his expectations as a well-respected guy.
"Universally respected and brutally honest, Hoke has a sense of humor and a guy’s guy approach that everyone seems to appreciate."
Shy Tuttle continues to make progress – Danny Parker, Scout
Tennessee Vols defensive tackle has not been able to practice since injuring himself against the South Carolina Gamecocks last Fall. However, he has been working to get back into shape. Multiple defensive linemen are coming back from injury on the team. However, Tuttle is the main one who still is working to get healthy before the season starts.
"Training camp starts in one week. When the Big Orange hits Haslam Field, the 6-foot-2, 308-pound junior won’t be full-go, however, Tuttle is making progress and has started running."
Todd Kelly Jr. praises Shaq Wiggins addition – Grant Ramey, GoVols247
Tennessee Vols safety Todd Kelly Jr., likely to be the leader of the secondary this year, has welcomed the arrival of graduate transfer cornerback Shaq Wiggins. Wiggins was once a four-star recruit and has a ton of experience after spending four years with the Louisville Cardinals. So he should add a ton of depth to the secondary, and it looks like he’s already making a strong impression.
"Asked about Wiggins, the graduate-transfer who previously started games at both Georgia and Louisville, senior safety Todd Kelly Jr. couldn’t help but smile while trying to describe his new teammate.“Shaq, as soon he got in, he fit in,” Kelly said of Wiggins’ arrival in Knoxville. “He’s a comical guy. He loves the game of football and his IQ is very high for football intelligence.”"
