Mike Canales and Peyton Manning, the death of John Ward’s wife, and Tennessee Vols leaders headline the Volunteers news for Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

Football season keeps getting closer by the second, and that’s part of our news for today. But it’s not all good news for the Tennessee Vols today.

As we get set to bring you the updates on Rocky Top for this final Tuesday in July, there is a tragedy in Big Orange family to get to.

At the same time, we have an official mention of names that give us a look ahead to this academic school year when it comes to athletics.

But we start with a legendary former Vol and the current quarterbacks coach.

Mike Canales keeps former Vol Peyton Manning’s advice on board – Mike Griffith, SEC Country

Tennessee Vols quarterbacks coach Mike Canales is in the midst of working with Jarrett Guarantano and Quinten Dormady as they duke it out to try to start for the 2017 season. But he’s using advice from UT legend Peyton Manning to motivate both quarterbacks and Will McBride. Here’s a look at what he said.

"“Every rep you take in practice has to be executed at game rep speed —  and that’s the way we’re gonna practice, and that’s the way we’re gonna prepare.“What Peyton Manning said to those guys in that (quarterbacks meeting) room, is what I preach and what I coach. personality will not allow it to be less than 100 percent, I want perfection.”"

Barbara Ward, wife of John Ward, dies – Tom Mattingly, Knoxville News Sentinel

For 31 years, John Ward built a major reputation in Knoxville and nationally for his work as the radio broadcaster for the Tennessee Vols. His wife, Barbara Ward, passed away last Thursday at age 79 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center following a traffic accident on July 14.

"Mrs. Ward, a native of Maryville and graduate of the old Everett High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in art history from Tennessee and a doctorate in jurisprudence from the UT College of Law. As an undergraduate student, she earned Phi Beta Kappa distinction. She and John had been married 55 years, according to her obituary."

UT announces VOLeaders Academy Class of 2017-2018 – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols athletics department announced its VOLeaders Academy Class on Monday. It included 19 players across 15 different sports. Notable athletes included Marquez Callaway, Trey Smith and Grant Williams.

"The University of Tennessee announced the inception of its VOLeaders Academy in July of 2015. The first-of-its-kind program is a dynamic partnership between the UT Center for Leadership and Service, the Center for Sport, Peace and Society and the Athletics Department.The program is unlike any in the country, spanning the boundaries of three different areas of campus, from academics to student life and athletics. It partners athletics with two of the most unique and respected programs on campus for the development of the student-athletes."
