The Tennessee Vols’ Coaches Poll ranking, preparation for Georgia Tech and a basketball tour in Europe lead the Volunteers news for Friday, Aug. 4, 2017.

Happy Friday! We enter the first Friday in August of 2017 with Tennessee Vols fall camp fully underway, and the college football preseason taking over the news.

Our updates on Rocky Top for today mostly focus on those stories. One is about a national story, and the other is about Tennessee in practice.

We also have a summer basketball story to bring you, as Rick Barnes is preparing his young team for the year as well.

But as always, let’s start with the big football news of the day. And this time, it’s a national story to illustrate where Tennessee football is as a program.

Tennessee Vols come in at No. 24 in 2017 preseason Amway Coaches Poll – USA TODAY Sports

The Amway Coaches Poll is out for the preseason, and Tennessee football is in it once again. After two straight years of finishing in the Top 25 in that poll, the Vols enter their third straight preseason under Butch Jones ranked in the poll’s preseason Top 25, one of only 10 teams to do that. Tennessee is the lowest among six SEC teams in the Top 25, with the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 1.

"The Amway Coaches Poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of head coaches at FBS schools. The panel is chosen by random draw, conference by conference plus independents, from a pool of coaches who have indicated to the American Football Coaches Association their willingness to participate."

Tennessee Vols preparing for Georgia Tech in fall camp – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

Tennessee football has a very scary season-opener against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. It’s not just that they’re facing a team in their home town that went 9-4 last year while breaking in a new quarterback. It’s also because they have to prepare for the triple-option offense, which they’re not used to seeing. So the Vols, naturally are being smart to prepare for it in fall camp.

"Tennessee will open the season against the Yellow Jackets on Sept. 4 (8 p.m.; TV: ESPN) in a Chick-fil-A Kickoff game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Before preparing for Georgia Tech’s option-based offense, Tennessee has consulted with other coaching staffs on how to prepare."

Tennessee basketball begins European tour – Citizen Tribune

Rick Barnes is about to enter his third season as Tennessee Vols basketball coach. And he’s taking his team to Europe for 10 days ahead of the preseason. The Vols arrived Thursday and begin their tour in Spain.

"The Volunteers also will visit Valencia, Spain, and Paris before returning to the United States Aug. 12. Tennessee will play an exhibition game against local professional competition in all three cities along the way."
