Former Tennessee Vols players making impressive debuts in the NFL and updates from the UT coordinators lead the Volunteers news for Friday, Aug. 11, 2017.

Happy Friday to all Tennnessee Vols fans. The continuation of the NFL preseason has everybody in Knoxville and beyond excited about football season being less than a month away.

In fact, the play of former Vols in a couple of preseason games leads our news updates on Rocky Top for today. We also have updates from all three coordinators on the Vols football team to get to.

And there’s some basketball news as well. One involves the men’s team finishing its tour overseas, and the other is a bizarre legal issue surrounding a former Vol.

But let’s start with what happened in preseason Thursday.

Derek Barnett and Alvin Kamara both got a taste of real, in-game action for the first time in the NFL Thursday. And both broke out immediately. Barnett finished his first game with the Philadelphia Eagles with two sacks against the Green Bay Packers. And in his first game with the New Orleans Saints, Kamara had four carries for 35 yards. Joshua Dobbs will give Vols fans something else to watch Friday night as he starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"Yes, it’s just the preseason. But two former Vols are already impressing with their play in the NFL during the preseason.Former Vols Derek Barnett and Alvin Kamara made their NFL debuts in the preseason on Thursday night, and both left Vol fans and fans of their respective NFL teams smiling."

Tennessee Vols coordinators give updates on football team – UTSports

Based on the reports given from the coordinators Thursday, toughness is a big factor on the team right now. John Kelly and Kendal Vickers are emerging as great players and leaders on both sides of the ball as well. And there’s also a focus on consistency.

"Tennessee offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Larry Scott, defensive coordinator Bob Shoop and special teams coordinator/defensive backs coach Charlton Warren spoke to reporters on Thursday."

Tennessee basketball team finishes European tour – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

Rick Barnes’s Tennessee Vols went 3-0 on their European tour, finishing undefeated. They finished with an 84-79 win over the Paris All Stars thanks to a double-double from Grant Williams. Their third win definitely makes this trip an accomplishment.

"Tennessee beat the Catalan All-Stars last Friday in Barcelona and rallied to win against the Valencia All-Stars on Monday in Godella, Spain."

Police searching for former Scooter McFadgon – WMC Action News 5

Former Tennessee Vols guard Scooter McFadgon is one of 10 suspects still at large after a major drug bust that led to multiple arrests, according to reports. McFadgon played for Buzz Peterson in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 after transferring from the University of Memphis.

"Dozens of suspected criminals are now behind bars thanks to a six-month investigation called Operation Cocaine Cowboy.Memphis Police Department announced it arrested 26 of 36 drug dealers identified during the six-month investigation."
