Preseason All-SEC Tennessee Vols, Josh Smith’s injury, and the women’s soccer home opener lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017.

SEC football is a week away! That’s right, college football is so close we can almost taste it. After all, the first set of games are this Saturday. And this makes Tennessee Vols fans everywhere psyched about what’s to come.

As we get set to bring you our news on Rocky Top for today, the look ahead to football season is still the big story. But the season getting closer isn’t the only good news.

We also have good news surrounding the Tennessee football team to bring you regarding an injury to a key player that is not as bad as we thought it was. Coaches’ respect for the Vols is also a story.

And there’s one non-football story to bring you. But let’s start with the big news that broke yesterday.

Four Vols make 2017 Coaches Preseason All-SEC – SECSports Staff

There was no change for the Tennessee Vols between the 2017 Coaches Preseason All-SEC team and the Media Preseason All-SEC team. Both had Jashon Robertson, Jauan Jennings, Evan Berry and Trevor Daniel as the four players on the list. The Coaches All-SEC had Robertson, Daniel and Jennings as third-teamers and Berry as a second-teamer. The only difference between that and the media selections is that Robertson was a second-teamer on the Media Preseason All-SEC.

"Alabama placed a league-leading 15 representatives on the 2017 Preseason Coaches All-Southeastern Conference Football Team, the SEC announced Wednesday. This marked the 15th consecutive year of the SEC Coaches Preseason All-SEC Team. All 14 SEC schools were represented on the All-SEC team, including eight schools with five or more selections."

Tennessee Vols receiver Josh Smith suffered a preseason injury, clearing the way for Tyler Byrd to truly take over in the slot position at receiver. However, the news for Smith, the senior receiver, is much better than expected, as he now may only miss two games.

"UT WR Josh Smith has shoulder sprain – not broken collarbone – and expected to be out 4-5 weeks."
