Happy Friday! By this time next week, the Tennessee Vols will be gearing up for their first football game of the season.
It certainly is an exciting time to be on Rocky Top. Our news for the Vols today involves lots of football, as always.
But there’s a look ahead to basketball season as well. And we’ve got some other sports to bring you that are now in season.
Let’s start with a recap of football news from Thursday.
Tennessee Vols getting healthier but need to improve – Mike Griffith, SEC Country
Tennessee football held another practice on Thursday. The offensive line is coming together, but a few defensive players still need to get healthy. Also, the actual play was an issue after Thursday’s practice, which could be a bit of a concern for the Vols with the season right around the corner.
"Tennessee’s football team is getting healthier, and now it needs to get better. In a hurry. The No. 25-ranked Vols open the season in 10 days against Georgia Tech at 8 p.m. on Sept. 4 in Atlanta’s new Mercedes-Benz Stadium."
Tennessee Vols basketball schedule complete – SEC Sports staff online
The Tennessee basketball schedule was finalized on Thursday after the SEC announced the men’s basketball slate for 2017-2018. The Vols will open their SEC schedule on the road against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday, Dec. 30.
"Each SEC team plays the other 13 teams at least one time during league play. They will then play their three permanent opponents a second time and the remaining two games will be scheduled on a rotating basis. The fifth annual Big 12/SEC Challenge will take place on Saturday, January 27."
Four Tennessee Vols named to Senior Bowl watch list – Reese’s Senior Bowl website
Tennessee football seniors Trevor Daniel, Evan Berry, Todd Kelly Jr. and Ethan Wolf were named to the Senior Bowl’s 2018 Watch List.
"The Senior Bowl’s 2018 Watch List includes more than 400 student athletes from nearly every level of college football. These are the players who we are looking to fill the 110 roster spots that form the North and South squads for the nation’s premier all-star game."
Tennessee soccer defeats ETSU – Kenny Hawkins, WJHL online
The Tennessee Vols soccer team won its home opener of the 2017 season with a huge 6-1 victory over ETSU Thursday night to move to 3-0 on the season. Khadija Shaw scored two goals to lead the team to victory.
"Just 16 minutes into the game, ETSU junior forward Pauline Vienne (Lausanne, Switzerland) would find the net on an unassisted shot from 17 yards out to put the Blue and Gold up 1-0 early. The goal was Vienne’s fourth goal in three games for the Bucs.That lead would not last long, however, as Tennessee’s Rylie O’Keefe would head a long distance pass into the net for the equalizer 32 seconds later. The Vols would not look back, adding three more goals in the first half."
Tennessee Vols volleyball set to open season – UTSports
Tennessee Vols fall sports continue to take off, and volleyball is the next season to begin. It’ll start Friday night in the Tennessee Classic.
"The Vols (0-0) kick off the season on Friday at 7 p.m. against Western Michigan (0-0), a team picked to finish third in the West Division in the Mid-American Conference coaches’ preseason poll."
