Tennessee football report card: Grading the Vols in their 42-41 OT win vs. Georgia Tech
Special Teams Grades
Place-Kicking: A
We will hardly weigh this grade from the Monday night game, but it does deserve some recognition. Aaron Medley did not miss an extra point all night, and every kickoff he had either went for a touchback or pinned Georgia Tech inside the 20-yard line. That’s enough to warrant an A.

Punting: A
Trevor Daniel had six punts for an average of 47 yards per punt. And he nailed five of those punts inside the 20-yard line. Talk about impressive! Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that one went for 70 yards. Daniel clearly had a strong start to his Ray Guy campaign in this game. And he is continuing the tradition of Tennessee football as Punter-U his senior year.
Return Game: A+
There are two factors to this: actual returns and coverage on punts and field goals. Tennessee football didn’t have many chances at good punt returns because Georgia Tech was so good in that area. But Evan Berry had some amazing kickoff returns to spot the Vols with good field position. And the final piece to this puzzle was the field goal block team. Tennessee blocked two field goals in this game, which made all the difference. And yes, that was enough to give this unit an A+.
Overall special teams grade: A
So they didn’t return a kick for a touchdown, which is why this is just an A. They did, however, do everything else. And it’s more than enough to warrant this grade. Special teams was not one thing to worry about for Tennessee football fans Monday night.
