Quinten Dormady owes a huge part of his amazing debut as a starter to Marquez Callaway. He entered the game buried in the depth chart as a backup wideout to Jauan Jennings.

  • But Jennings left the game in the first half with an injury. And after the Vols fell behind 21-7, it became a huge concern.

Who would step up for them with Georgia Tech selling out to stop John Kelly? That person became Callaway.

The Tennessee football coaches raved about Callaway all offseason, particularly in the spring, which is why it was so odd that he did not get the No. 2 wideout starting job. Sure, Brandon Johnson and Josh Palmer also drew preseason hype. But Callaway was the one they raved about.

Anyway, he sparked the Vols’ offense by catching a beautiful fade pass from Dormady late in the third quarter to pull them to within a touchdown.

Then, Callaway took a short pass and turned the corner to run it in for a 50-yard touchdown. But neither of those were even his most impressive play.

That came on the final drive, when Dormady chucked it into double-coverage off a play-action and trusted him to make a play.

Callaway jumped up over both defenders, caught the ball, and was brought down by his face mask. He then took a pass in the flats from Dormady in the second overtime and turned it into a 15-yard game.

When it was all over, Callaway had four catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Simply put, the Vols found another playmaker at receiver with Josh Malone gone.  And that playmaker is the 6’2″ 199-pound sophomore who dazzled everybody in the offseason.
