5 dumbest coaching decisions in Tennessee football’s loss to Florida
5. Tennessee football not playing proper Hail Mary defense
When the Vols give up a Hail Mary due to poor coaching and its only the fifth dumbest decision in the game, you know it was horrible in this game. However, the Hail Mary defense was horrendous.
Florida had a clean touchdown pass on it, and there was no fluke play involved there. Tennessee football just played the worst defense ever.
The Vols had nine seconds. NINE SECONDS!!! They should have played everybody deep. Even if Florida gets into field goal range at that point, Tennessee’s defense would get the tackle after the clock ran out.
Instead, they played a standard defense, even falling for a deep curl route, and that allowed for Feleipe Franks to make his one perfect throw of the day.
This is not the first time Bob Shoop has had an issue with this. Last year, he gave up a deep pass to the Georgia Bulldogs for a touchdown, but it was nullified by the Vols’ Hail Mary to end the season.
And this certainly isn’t the first time Tennessee football blew a game on a big pass in The Swamp. Remember the Will Grier 4th and 14 play in 2015? That also was due to the worst defensive call ever by John Jancek.
This time, it’s due to Bob Shoop. But Shoop called a pretty decent game until the fourth quarter, and the game never should have come down to this play. It’s a result of other idiotic coaching decisions we have to name.
