A letter from Tennessee Vols athletic director John Currie, Candace Parker speaking out and Brett Favre lead the Volunteers news for Friday, Sept. 29, 2017.

Happy Friday! As we get set for the weekend, the Tennessee Vols football team has another huge game to play with Butch Jones in hot water. But after our extensive coverage of Saturday’s game against Georgia all week, that does not dominate our news for today.

Our updates on Rocky Top to kick off the final weekend of September do include one thing related to the Georgia game, but it involves a former NFL superstar. We also have an update from the athletic department to bring you.

And Lady Vols legend Candace Parker also made some news, which we’ll get to.

But let’s start with news related to the overall athletic department.

John Currie writes another letter to Vol Nation – UTSports

Tennessee Vols Athletic Director John Currie pinned another letter to fans in the Rocky Top community Friday morning. In it, he talked about Peyton Manning making the College Football Hall of Fame, the start of basketball season being around the corner, and many other sports updates. Here is a bit of what he said.

"As I close in on completing my sixth month as your athletic director, it has been a packed week of activity for me, including visiting lots of great Tennessee friends in Nashville Tuesday and Wednesday."

Brett Favre to be at Tennessee-Georgia game Saturday John North, WBIR

We already knew that Peyton Manning would be at the Tennessee Vols’ showdown with the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday. Now, the guys whose records he smashed will be there too. Brett Favre is going to be at the game due to a new sponsorship he has with a Tennessee-based cooler company, ORCA Coolers.

"The company on Saturday will be at Volunteer Village on UT’s campus, and they’re being recognized by UPS as a Tennessee Business of the Game, said ORCA marketing manager Pat Doyle.Favre will be on hand at the company’s booth, which will be at the UPS Booth, to meet fans, sign ORCA items and pose for photos, Doyle told 10News."

Candace Parker speaks on Pat Summitt – Dan Fleser, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee Lady Vols legend Candace Parker spoke about how the late Pat Summitt is still helping to resonate with here in the WNBA Finals. Parker’s Sparks are tied with the Minnesota Lynx 1-1 right now in the finals, and she is going for her second straight ring.

"On Parker’s right arm, there’s a tattoo of her former coach’s iconic advice: “Left foot, right foot, breathe.”“I think of her impact, what she believed, what she instilled in me,” Parker said Thursday in advance of Game 3 between Parker and the defending champion Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx."

Tennessee soccer shuts out Alabama – Zari Malbacias, Tennessee Journalist

The Tennessee Vols women’s soccer team shut out the Alabama Crimson Tide Thursday night 2-0. Ranked No. 25 in the nation, the shutout got the Vols to their 10th win of the season.

"Tennessee (10-1-1, 2-1-1 SEC) struck first in the 19th minute when junior Khadija Shaw scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Shaw was assisted by redshirt freshman Erin Gilroy who leads the team in total assists with five on the season."
