When it comes to X’s and O’s and recruiting, you can’t find a better combination than Bob Stoops. The guy is amazing at both, and that’s why he had such a successful career with the Oklahoma Sooners’ program.

  • However, there are a few reasons that Tennessee football should not look at him.

For starters, Stoops himself has insisted he won’t coach again. Now, you can take that with a grain of salt. But do the Vols really need to waste their time on what might be a fruitless expedition?

Even if you do take that with a grain of salt, though, Stoops would likely go somewhere else. The SEC East is not too inviting for him since he would have to coach against his brother Mark and the Kentucky Wildcats every year. That makes Tennessee be even less likely to be the school that pulls him out of retirement.

Also, he has some weaknesses of his own.

Stoops, as great as he was, is an all-time terrible motivator, as Fox Sports 1 analyst Skip Bayless often notes. Remember, he was known as a choke artist in big games for years. From 2003 to 2008, the Sooners played in BCS bowl games five of six years.

They lost all five, including three of which were national championship games. This has always been a major knock on Stoops. Just look at the embarrassing College Football Playoff performance he had in his lone appearance there in 2015.

Finally, Stoops has his own baggage. I still have a hard time believing his random offseason resignation didn’t have something to do with the Joe Mixon scandal breaking. Given the lawsuit that Tennessee faced last year, that makes bringing him a very unadvisable decision.
