Tennessee Vols football players speaking up, another injury and the Lady Vols lead the Volunteers news for Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017.

We’ve reached the middle of the week. And the drama for the Tennessee Vols continues. In fact, it’s getting worse in many ways when things come to the football program.

And that’s what leads our news for today as we get set to bring you our updates on Rocky Top. To be fair, the players are still focused and practicing hard.

But the team got hit with another stroke of bad news on the injury front that fans probably expected but didn’t want to hear. With Butch Jones’s hot seat on fire, it’s the last thing he needed.

On the brighter note, we have other sports to look at, and one is just beginning practice for the season.

We’ll get to all of that, but let’s start with the football media session.

Tennessee football players speak to media – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

Tennessee Vols football players Kahlil McKenzie, John Kelly, Quart’e Sapp and Ethan Wolf all spoke to the media after Tuesday’s practice. They talked about rallying to finish the year strong and the things they needed to improve on.

"Tennessee players met with reporters after Tuesday’s practice on Haslam Field, discussing the Georgia loss, the bye week and moving on while distractions surround the program."

Todd Kelly Jr. to have season ending surgery – WBIR

Tennessee Vols senior safety Todd Kelly Jr. had knee surgery on Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season. Kelly has been out since the Florida game earlier this year. A leader in the secondary, he is certainly a huge loss for the football team.

"TK Jr. played in the first two games of the season before sitting out due to a lingering knee issue. Because he did not participate in more than three games and the injury is season ending, Kelly Jr. could possibly receive a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA and be eligible to return next season as a redshirt senior."

Tennessee Lady Vols hold first practice – Dan Fleser, Knoxville News Sentinel

With Tennessee Vols women’s basketball head coach Holly Warlick feeling the heat and in desperate need of a  great season, the team held its first practice for the 2017-2018 year Tuesday. Warlick may have lost Diamond DeShields, Jaime Nared and Mercedes Russell are back for their senior year. And she’s got the No. 1 recruiting class for the year. So her focus is getting those recruits acclimated to the system.

"Although Lady Vols coach Holly Warlick and her staff have considerable preseason access to players, Tuesday marked the beginning of more team work and more tempo.“It’s big for us because we haven’t done a lot of team things,” Warlick said. “We’ve done a lot of individual work, a lot of position work, a lot of individual defense, offense, scoring, one-on-one stuff.”"

Tennessee women’s golf finishes 3rd at Magnolia Invitational – UTSports

With a 293 in the final round and a 54-hole total of 872 for 8-over-par, the Tennessee Vols women’s golf team finished third at the Magnolia Invitational behind the Ole Miss Rebels and Memphis Tigers. Four Vols finished in the top 17.

"The finish marks the Lady Vols’ second top-three finish this season and the team’s first back-to-back placement in the top three since the beginning of the 2015-16 season."

Tennessee volleyball to face Auburn Wednesday night – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols volleyball team hosts the Auburn Tigers Wednesday night in a game that will be available on WatchESPN and the ESPN app. Tennessee is undefeated at home this year so far but is looking to get back on track.
