Tennessee Vols football assistant coaches speaking to the media and Evan Berry’s injury update lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017.

It’s the first Thursday in October, and while the feeling of football being full in-season is great for some, it’s frustrating for Tennessee Vols fans. There’s still a lot of season left, and UT fans can only talk about Butch Jones’s hot seat.

The football program once again leads our news for today. But it mainly deals with what Tennessee is working on during the bye week. And we have an injury report to bring you.

We’ve also got a recap of a volleyball game to get to. And we have a soccer game to preview.

Let’s start with a look at what the football team is working on this week.

Three Tennessee football assistant coaches spoke to reporters Wednesday. Defensive line depth, a potential Darrell Taylor suspension, the increased role of some defensive backs, Trevor Daniel’s rugby punts and building depth among running backs were all topics of conversation.

"Tennessee defensive line coach Brady Hoke, running backs coach Robert Gillespie and special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach Charlton Warren met with reporters after Wednesday’s practice on Haslam Field, discussing the Vols’ bye week work."

Berry may not be back for Gamecocks –  Blake Toppmeyer, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee Vols football coach Butch Jones said he does not expect Evan Berry to be back for the team’s game against the South Carolina Gamecocks next week. He said that, despite getting closer, Berry is still probably a ‘couple of weeks away’ from being ready to go.

"Evan Berry had kickoff returns of 35 and 51 yards in Tennessee’s season opener against Georgia Tech. He hasn’t returned a kick since then due to an undisclosed injury, and Vols coach Butch Jones doesn’t expect him back for next week’s game against South Carolina."

"The Tennessee Vols volleyball program lost to the Auburn Tigers 3-2 Wednesday night. With the loss, the Vols fell to 8-6 on the year and 1-4 in the SEC."

Junior Erica Treiber tallied a team-best 16 kills and Sedona Hansen added a career-best 27 digs but the Volunteers couldn’t close out the Auburn Tigers in a 3-2 loss (22-25, 15-19, 18-25, 27-25, 11-15) on Wednesday night in Thompson-Boling Arena.

Tennessee soccer to host Ole Miss – UTSports

The No. 21 ranked Tennessee Vols soccer team returns home after a two-game road stand with a huge game against the No. 24 ranked Ole Miss Rebels. With just one loss and one tie on their schedule, the Vols are on a roll early. This is another huge chance for the soccer program to validate its standing.

"The game kicks off at 7 p.m. Eastern at Regal Soccer Stadium. Admission is free. The Vols (10-1-1, 2-1-1) are coming off a 2-0 victory last week at Alabama. Ole Miss (9-2-1, 2-2-0) lost 2-0 to No. 3 South Carolina at home."
