Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones updating the quarterback situation and a football injury report lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017.

The weekend is almost here, and that means the Tennessee Vols are nearly back to taking the football field after a bye week. Whether or not that’s a good thing or a bad thing is a completely different question.

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top for today, it indeed continues to center around the football program. The Vols held another media session on Wednesday.

And plenty of updates came out of that session. As a result, we have plenty of football news to bring you.

So let’s get started with the big story of the day.

Butch Jones confirms Jarrett Guarantano will start – Mike Wilson, Knoxville News Sentinel

Butch Jones held another media session Wednesday, and in it he confirmed that Jarrett Guarantano will be the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Vols over Quinten Dormady this weekend against the South Carolina Gamecocks. He said that Dormady was disappointed but accepted his role as a backup.

"The redshirt freshman has been the backup quarterback behind junior Quinten Dormady, who started the first five games of the season. The Tennessee offense ranks second-to-last in the SEC with 24.2 points per game, which Jones pointed to as the primary reason for a change."

Two seniors out for Saturday against South Carolina – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones said in his Wednesday media session that senior safety and kick returner Evan Berry and tight end Jakob Johnson would both be out against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Berry is a huge loss, as the Vols could desperately use a special teams spark in this game. At the same time, Johnson has become a great complementary tight end. So that will make blocking harder without him.

"Berry hasn’t played since the Vols’ season-opening win Sept. 4 against Georgia Tech because of a leg injury, while Johnson missed Tennessee’s 41-0 loss to Georgia on Sept. 30 after suffering an injury Sept. 23 against Massachusetts.Jones said both players are “progressing” and “getting closer and closer” to returning, but they’re not quite ready to play."

"“John and I talk all the time. The great thing is, John has been here, and he understands the program. He understands where it’s come from.”"
