The return of injured Tennessee Vols football players to practice and the honoring of Pat Summitt lead the Volunteers news for Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017.

It’s Tuesday, and much to the chagrin of many Tennessee Vols fans, Butch Jones is still on the job. With the Alabama Crimson Tide on the horizon, that is a scary prospect for many people in Knoxville.

Still, the football season goes on, and housekeeping duties related to it lead our news on Rocky Top for today. We’ve got a bit of good news on the injury front to bring you as our lead story.

But while one coach’s hot seat continues to get hotter, a late legendary Tennessee Vols coach gets honored in another way. And that’s another part of our news.

Let’s start with football, though.

Injured Vols back at practice – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

Butch Jones confirmed on Monday that Evan Berry and Jakob Johnson were both back at practice. The two Tennessee Vols seniors have been injured for a while, and their return is a huge boost to the football team. Getting Berry in particular back out on the field would be a huge plus.

"Berry hasn’t played since the Vols’ season-opening win Sept. 4 against Georgia Tech, when he left with an undisclosed injury. Jones said the former All-America kick returner is ready to return to practice, but it’s still not clear whether he will be able to play Saturday at top-ranked Alabama (7-0, 4-0 SEC)."

Former Vol honoring Pat Summitt by cycling – Steve Megargee, Knoxville News Sentinel

Former Tennessee Lady Vols star Michelle Brooke-Marciniak, who starred for the program in the mid-1990s and helped them win their first national title in Pat Summitt’s three-peat, is now honoring the legendary coach with a pretty impressive goal. Brooke-Marciniak will cycle 1,098 miles in memory of her.

"Brooke-Marciniak has joined a group of people riding bicycles all the way from Knoxville to Marathon, Florida, to raise money and awareness for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The 12-day excursion begins Tuesday and lasts 1,098 miles – one mile for each of Summitt’s career wins as the Tennessee women’s basketball coach."

Tennessee-Kentucky game time announced – SEC Sports staff

The Tennessee Vols’ match-up against the Kentucky Wildcats is now set. With morale and hype in Knoxville continuing to drop under Butch Jones and expectations rising in Lexington under Mark Stoops, the prospect of a rare Kentucky win here is improving, especially since the Wildcats are playing at home. The SEC recognizes that, which is why this will be a prime time game, at 7:30 p.m. E.T. on the SEC Network.

"The schedule for the ninth weekend of the regular season is comprised of five conference games and one non-conference game."
