Quotes from Ethan Wolf and Jarrett Guarantano along with the Tennessee Vols’ APR score lead the Volunteers news for Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017.

Amidst all the talk about Butch Jones’s job security and all the apathy surrounding the program, the Tennessee Vols football team is in full-on Kentucky preparation mode. Hey, the season has to go on, right?

As a result, our news on Rocky Top for today focuses on the week ahead. This rendition of our morning report touches on quotes from a couple of players as they look ahead to facing the Wildcats in Lexington.

One might allude to somebody talking a bit too much. The other brings out sympathy from fans for a player who is in his final year in Knoxville.

And for a little more bad news, we’ll close with some academic updates. But let’s start with the players’ quotes.

Guarantano: Offense ‘ready to explode’ – David Cobb, Chattanooga Times Free Press

The Tennessee Vols haven’t scored an offensive touchdown in 14 quarters. Jarrett Guarantano has started two games and has yet to lead a touchdown drive this season against an FBS team. But that’s not stopping the team and Guarantano specifically from talking itself up. After promising a magical finish to the season, the quarterback now says the offense is ready to explode. Perhaps he should get at least one touchdown first.

"“There are some things we’ve done to hurt ourselves,” redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrett Guarantano said Tuesday. “But I think our confidence is still there. I think the offensive linemen still have trust in me and (running back) John Kelly and the receivers to make plays. John Kelly has trust in them.”"

Ethan Wolf talks about frustration – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Tennessee Vols tight end Ethan Wolf opened up about how the season has been going so far. The senior, in his final year in Knoxville, talked about things being frustrating. After helping to turn around the program and seeing it back on a downward slide, it’s understandable why Wolf feels this way.

"“Over the last month, there’s definitely been a lot of frustration,” Wolf said Tuesday afternoon. “Nobody likes losing. That’s probably overall just one of the biggest things that we get frustrated about. We all put our heart and souls into this game 365 days out of the year, and when you don’t capitalize on those 12 opportunities that you get, it’s frustrating. I’d say that’s the most frustrating thing overall.”"

Vols can’t rely on APR score for bowl game – Dan Harralson, Saturday Down South

If there aren’t enough .500 teams to go to bowl games at the end of the year, five-win teams can make it based on their APR score. The Tennessee Vols, however, cannot rely on their APR score to get to a bowl game this year if they finish with only five wins. Jerry Palm of CBS spoked with Saturday Down South about the Vols’ APR situation.

"Tennessee’s APR number is 972 (tied for 52nd nationally) and Palm said that is “not bad but it would be overly optimistic to say that might be good enough when you look at other teams that could finish 5-7 this year.”"
