Tennessee football finally found a quarterback for its 2018 class. Former Cal commit JT Shrout chose the Volunteers during the early signing period.

It was a very successful morning for Tennessee football recruiting during the early signing period. And Jeremy Pruitt has the Vols back on track going forward with the real National Signing Day a little over a month out.

Following two four-star commitments from the Memphis area, Pruitt found his quarterback. A week after Adrian Martinez and Michael Penix both decommitted, JT Shrout, a former Cal commitment, flipped to Tennessee football after decommitting from the Golden Bears Tuesday night.

Shrout, a three-star on Rivals out of Hart High School in Newhall, Calif., signed with the Vols Wednesday morning. He is a pro-style quarterback who flat-out defines the type of offense Jeremy Pruitt clearly wants to run in Knoxville.

Standing at 6’3″ 190 pounds, Shrout is a Top 15 quarterback in the nation for 2018 according to Rivals. He brings solid size to the Vols and could definitely compete for the starting job.

With his commitment, Tennessee football is set at quarterback going into the 2018 year. They can have a wide open competition as Shrout joins Will McBride, Jarrett Guarantano and Quinten Dormady.

Of course, one of them could transfer during the offseason now. However, Pruitt can at least take solace in the fact that he has clear options now.

With the Vols beefing up their physicality, going back to a pro-style, and finding key commitments in-state and in the trenches, it’s clear what Pruitt is trying to do and the identity he’s trying to build. Shrout’s signing just affirms that and keeps the Tennessee football program on the right track.

After falling out of the top 60 in the recruiting rankings, the Vols secured three key commitments Wednesday morning with Shrout and the two Cordova kids. That’s a huge success and proves the program is heading back in the right direction.
