A Tennessee Vols recruit generating some buzz with his talk and a women’s basketball win lead the Volunteers news for Friday, Dec. 22, 2017.

Happy Friday! It’s the last weekday before Christmas. However, it’s the first day that is longer than the previous day since June 22, 2017. So things are about to get brighter, and Tennessee Vols fans are hoping the same thing for their program.

As we get set to bring you today’s news on Rocky Top, our focus still is on the success of the early signing period. We get to the residual effects of it with one player.

On top of that, there’s a former Tennessee football player to give respect to. And a win by another major program is a big story.

But we start with a recruit who committed to the Tennessee Vols on Wednesday and is already generating headlines.

UT commit Jeremy Banks exudes confidence – Blake Morgan, SEC Country

Four-star running back Jeremy Banks out of Cordova, Tenn. committed to the Tennessee Vols on Wednesday during the early signing period. The next day, he began speaking. And in a conversation with SEC Country, he did not hide his confidence. Here’s a quote from him.

"“I’m going to go in and compete and have a shot at a starting position. You’re going to see me on TV next year.”"

Tennessee Lady Vols defeat Stanford – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols women’s basketball team defeated the No. 18 ranked Stanford Cardinal Thursday night in California. With the win, the Lady Vols will enter SEC play undefeated at 12-0. It’s the first win at Stanford for the Lady Vols since 2005 and clearly the first for Holly Warlick.

"Senior Jaime Nared posted a 28-point effort to lead the No. 7 Lady Vols to an 83-71 victory on the road against No. 18 Stanford (6-6).…Senior Mercedes Russell contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds on the night, while freshman Evina Westbrook posted a career high of 17 points."

Former Vol commits to New Mexico – Patrick Brown, GoVols247

Sheriron Jones had a tumultuous time with the Tennessee Vols. Once a four-star quarterback, he never got a fair shake to be a starter. But after leaving the program last year, he’s now back in FBS play. Jones committed to play for the New Mexico Lobos.

"Sheriron Jones, who left the Vols in May and played this season at Mt. San Jacinto College in his native California, signed with New Mexico on Wednesday and will continue his career with the Lobos in the Mountain West Conference. The former four-star prospect out of Moreno Valley, Calif., played in just one game in two seasons at Tennessee and briefly transferred to Colorado after his freshman season before returning to Tennessee."
