Jeremy Pruitt taking his position as Tennessee Vols head coach full-time and basketball updates lead the Volunteers news for Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018.

The national championship game is over. Much to the chagrin of Tennessee Vols fans, the Alabama Crimson Tide picked up another title. However, at the same time, this one was bittersweet. We’ll get to why in a minute.

But our news on Rocky Top for Tuesday morning has a lot to do with that national title game, believe it or not. At the same time, that’s our only football news for the day.

We also have basketball updates to bring you. This includes rankings for both the men’s and women’s teams after both had successful weekends on the court. And it also includes an upcoming game for one of them.

So the news is short for Vols fans today. But it’s pretty powerful. Let’s start with the end of the national title game between Alabama and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Jeremy Pruitt, Kevin Sherrer return to Vols – Patrick Brown, GoVols247

Although Tennessee Vols fans did not like to see Alabama winning another title, it was bittersweet this time since their future head coach, Jeremy Pruitt, was coaching the game as defensive coordinator for the Tide. Pruitt called a heck of a game and delivered Nick Saban that title. Now, his tenure in Tuscaloosa is over, and he’s able to solely focus on his job at Tennessee. The same is also true for Vols defensive coordinator Kevin Sherrer, who finished his last game as linebackers coach for Georgia Monday night as well.

"Jeremy Pruitt will have another national championship to tout to recruits as Tennessee’s new coach. His final game as Alabama’s defensive coordinator ended in thrilling fashion as the Crimson Tide beat Georgia 26-23 in overtime on a walk-off 41-yard touchdown pass from Tua Tagovailoa to Devanta Smith to win the College Football Playoff Championship on Monday night in Atlanta."
