Women’s SEC Power Rankings for Jan. 16: Did loss drop Lady Vols?
Last week: Defeated the Tennessee Volunteers; Lost to the Georgia Bulldogs
Last rank: 6th
It’s impossible to get a good read on this team. The Texas A&M Aggies scored a thrilling overtime victory against the Tennessee Lady Vols to give them their first loss of the year on Thursday. Then they came right back around on Sunday and lost at home to the Georgia Bulldogs.
That was their worst conference loss of the year, funny enough, since the other one was by two points on the road to a fully healthy South Carolina Gamecocks team. Overall, the Aggies are fine with the No. 16 ranked RPI and No. 5 ranked strength of schedule.
But the inexplicable split forced us to move the Aggies up only one spot in our SEC Power Rankings as opposed to, well, at least three spots. Yes, we still have to have them below Tennessee.
It took overtime for them to beat the Lady Vols at home, and then they lost a home game. So we couldn’t flip them.
Still, Gary Blair’s team is in good shape. There’s not much to worry about despite that loss on Sunday. But going forward, the Aggies have a moderately tough road to prove exactly where they stand.
This week, they visit the Alabama Crimson Tide and host the LSU Tigers. Then they visit the Vanderbilt Commodores. So Alabama is the real test. They should beat LSU and Vandy, but if they beat Bama, they’ll be in great shape heading to Knoxville for a rematch with the Lady Vols.
