Women’s SEC Power Rankings for Jan. 16: Did loss drop Lady Vols?
Last week: Defeated the Ole Miss Rebels and Alabama Crimson Tide
Last rank: 1st
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are now 19-0 and 5-0 overall. And on top of everything, you can’t criticize their strength of schedule this year. It’s ranked No. 14 in the country, so this is a legitimate undefeated record.
Vic Schaefer’s team has five wins against Top 25 RPI teams and another two against teams in the Top 50. These guys are dominating everybody, and they clearly deserve this No. 1 spot in our SEC Power Rankings.
In conference play, they blew out the Georgia Bulldogs, who are No. 2 in these rankings. And they also controlled the LSU Tigers on the road while blowing out the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Now they have a week off before they get a chance to really prove their greatness. The Bulldogs will face the Tennessee Lady Vols on Sunday, Jan. 21 next. The Missouri Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies are all down the road too. So they have plenty of big games left.
However, in a crazy amount of luck, their conference schedule doesn’t include any of the top teams twice. So if they get past Tennessee, they could seriously be considering an undefeated season after that. The Gamecocks and the Aggies are at home after all, so their toughest test after the Lady Vols is Mizzou on the road.
After knocking off the UCONN Huskies’ dynasty last year, they have to be thinking about finishing the job now and getting that national championship. Doing it while going undefeated would just be that much sweeter.
