Women’s SEC Power Rankings for Jan. 16: Did loss drop Lady Vols?
Last week: Lost to the Mississippi State Bulldogs
Last rank: 11th
The Ole Miss Rebels may have an 11-6 record, but their No. 111 ranked strength of schedule has them down at No. 93 in the RPI. As a result, they have a lot of work to do to get into the NCAA Tournament. And right now, they haven’t been doing that work in conference play.
As a result, this team is the final team of the bottom tier of our SEC Power Rankings. And like the Auburn Tigers, this is the last team that had the case to be below the Vanderbilt Commodores. After all, Ole Miss and Auburn both share only one conference win, and it’s against the same team: the Florida Gators.
Did we mention Florida is far and away the worst team in the league? Ole Miss had two bad non-conference losses to teams outside of the Top 100 of the RPI. In his fifth year, Matt Insell is hoping to take another step with this team.
So far, though, that hasn’t happened. This week, they have another chance at a conference win by facing Florida on the road. But before that, they need to find a way to steal a game at home against the Missouri Tigers.
After all, next week they face the Tennessee Vols and Mississippi State Bulldogs. So things are not about t get any easier. And they could significantly fall in our SEC Power Rankings. The only things keeping them from being lower right now are their record, their one conference win, and almost beating the next team on this list.
