Women’s SEC Power Rankings for Jan. 16: Did loss drop Lady Vols?
Last week: Defeated the LSU Tigers; Lost to the Mississippi State Bulldogs
Last rank: 8th
All of a sudden, the Alabama Crimson Tide are looking at a potential spot in the NCAA Tournament! A 13-5 record overall with a 3-2 conference record is now enough to put them in the top half of our SEC Power Rankings. And they have to have momentum.
Okay, so they are still No. 63 in the RPI with the No. 75 ranked strength of schedule. So there is still a ton of work to do. On top of that, they are coming off a loss.
But that loss was on the road to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. And it followed a huge home win over the LSU Tigers, which capped off a three-game winning streak that included two road wins. In fact, their only conference losses are to MSU and the Missouri Tigers. And that one was close.
Kristy Curry has slowly been rebuilding Alabama since she took over. Remember, this program was in as bad of shape as possible. Last year, they just missed the NCAA Tournament. This year, the next step is barely getting in.
And right now, she has them on the cusp. Going forward, they have a great chance to get on a roll as well. After all, this team is about to have three straight games against the Vanderbilt Commodores, Kentucky Wildcats and Auburn Tigers. And they follow all of those games with the Arkansas Razorbacks at home.
But for breathing room, they need a big win to start all that off. And it comes with the Texas A&M Aggies at home before all those games. Win that one, and they can reel off a five-game winning streak before hosting the next team in our SEC Power Rankings.
