Last week: Defeated Arkansas Razorbacks and Kentucky Wildcats

Last rank: 4th

The Florida Gators fell hard last week in our SEC Power Rankings because of a bad loss to the Ole Miss Rebels on the road. At that point, we had thought that they had awoken to reality and were going to be the above average team we expected them to be this year.

  • Well, they proved us wrong again this past week. Florida scored two huge wins. Beating the Arkansas Razorbacks at home is just a quality victory. But then going on the road and shocking the Kentucky Wildcats is amazing.

As a result, with the Auburn Tigers losing, we had no choice but to bump this team right back up to No. 1. And they clearly belong here with the way they’ve played.

Now, with a No. 19 ranked strength of schedule and a No. 24 ranking in the RPI, Mike White’s team doesn’t have the same respect from the numbers that it has from us. However, that clearly shouldn’t matter overall. And the Gators are still doing fine.

In a loaded conference, Florida just stands out as clearly the top team right now, which is why they are No. 1 in our SEC Power Rankings. And it’s hard to see them falling anytime soon.

Up next for the Gators are home games against the South Carolina Gamecocks and Baylor Bears. Then they visit the Georgia Bulldogs before hosting the Alabama Crimson Tide. The next Top 50 RPI team they face on the road or Top 25 RPI team at all will be the Tennessee Vols on Feb. 21.

These guys could very well get to 22-5 and 13-1 in the SEC before that. So they are a dangerous team whose favorable schedule is only going to help them more. And that’s going to make it hard for them to fall from this spot in our SEC Power Rankings.
