Last week: Defeated Vanderbilt Commodores; Lost to Alabama Crimson Tide

Last rank: 12th

They have a better record than the Georgia Bulldogs but a significantly worse RPI, at No. 76, due to their No. 130 ranked strength of schedule. On top of that, the Mississippi State Bulldogs have a worse overall SEC record.

  • As a result, you could make the case to put them below Georgia right now in our SEC Power Rankings. But this past week, they did score the better win since we have LSU below Vanderbilt. And on top of that, they played a red-hot Alabama Crimson Tide team on the road.

So Mississippi State is a Top 10 SEC team, but they still have work to do. After all, that 14-5 record isn’t saying much to anybody right now.

Up next, though, is a road trip to the Kentucky Wildcats. Then they host the Missouri Tigers and visit the South Carolina Gamecocks. In fact, their next six games are against Top 60 RPI teams, so they finally have a chance to improve this schedule ranking.

Winning four of those six games would be great for the Bulldogs. They have a lot to be excited about coming up and can finally play their way to respectability.

Still, don’t get it twisted. Ben Howland’s unit has nothing to celebrate just yet. Because of their abysmal schedule, they only have one noteworthy win so far. And it’s a close one at home against the next team in our SEC Power Rankings.
