Women’s basketball Jan. 23 SEC Power Rankings: Lady Vols take significant dive
Last week: Lost to Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Mississippi State Bulldogs
Last rank: 3rd
Holly Warlick’s Tennessee Lady Vols started the year 15-0. With a huge win over the Texas Longhorns validating that start, they had earned enough respect to be a Top 10 team. But everybody knew that their recent four-game stretch would define them.

It included four Top 25 opponents, three of whom are in the Top 10, and three games on the road. Well, they failed miserably, losing three of four. Their only win came against the South Carolina Gamecocks when A’ja Wilson could not play.
As a result, while this team’s schedule strength has jumped to No. 19, we had no choice but to drop this team in our SEC Power Rankings. They showed that they are still like the previous two teams, who have been massively underachieving.
Sure, there’s no shame for most teams losing to the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Tennessee is not most teams. Now, the prospect of a No. 1 seed has dropped to a No. 3 or No. 4 seed.
A home game against the Ole Miss Rebels this week is a chance to get back on track. But they follow that up with the LSU Tigers on the road and then a chance to get revenge on the Texas A&M Aggies, facing them at Thompson-Boling Arena.
To prove their worth, they should win both games. Otherwise, this team will look like more of a pretender. And speaking of Texas A&M, we go to them next.
