Last week: Defeated the Auburn Tigers

Last rank: 2nd

Nobody should have seen this coming. The Georgia Bulldogs are shocking the world with their play right now! Of course, this past week was a light week. And winning one game against the Auburn Tigers isn’t that impressive in the grand scheme of things.

  • However, you can’t ignore a huge road win over the Texas A&M Aggies. That still stands tall over things the Tennessee Lady Vols did or even what the Missouri Tigers did. And it’s enough to keep them at No. 2 in our SEC Power Rankings with their 17-2 record and 5-1 SEC record.

Now their No. 54 ranked strength of schedule has kept this record from moving them up too much in the RPI. As a result, they are only ranked No. 22 right now. But they still have a pair of quality wins and are running the table the way they should.

After a down year last year, Joni Taylor clearly has this team back on the right track. One of the great young coaches in women’s college basketball, it looks as if she’s taking what Andy Landers built to the next level. And that’s impressive.

This week, though, the real test occurs. Georgia and Mizzou are vying for the No. 2 spot in our SEC Power Rankings. And they face each other in Athens this Thursday.

If the Dawgs can win that, they’ll have this spot locked up next week. After all, their next game will be against the Florida Gators. Right now, they’re only thinking about NCAA Tournament seeding. Thursday’s game against Mizzou goes a long way towards determining that. It’s the game of the week to watch in the conference.
