Women’s basketball Jan. 23 SEC Power Rankings: Lady Vols take significant dive
Last week: Lost to Missouri Tigers and Florida Gators
Last rank: 10th
The Ole Miss Rebels have become a team in collapse ever since the start of SEC play. And like the Auburn Tigers, it has been enough for us to significantly knock them down in our SEC Power Rankings. This past week, they fell one spot.
A loss to the Missouri Tigers is one thing. But the Florida Gators, the only team they beat in the conference this year, got unlikely revenge on them. And that bad loss was enough for us to knock these guys down a spot.
Matt Insell’s team is now just looking to stay above water in his fifth year to try to make another NIT appearance. At 11-8 and 1-5, this team is just outside of the Top 100 of the RPI. That’s because, like Auburn, they loaded up on a ridiculously easy non-conference schedule.
The rough conference play has increased their schedule rank only to No. 75. And it’s exposed how overrated their 10-3 non-conference record was. Ole Miss’s best win of the year so far is against the South Alabama Jaguars.
And a collapse could be on the horizon. This week, the Rebels face the Tennessee Lady Vols and Mississippi State Bulldogs. And at the start of February they have two road games against the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas A&M Aggies. This team is about to be .500 overall very fast. Simply put, the SEC is exposing them. So they keep falling in our SEC Power Rankings.
