Tennessee Vols morning report: Larry Scott’s new gig, track and field

Former Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Larry Scott’s new role and track and field news lead the Volunteers updates for Friday, Jan. 26, 2018.

Happy Friday to all of Vol Nation! It’s the final Friday in January, and while the national news has football-related topics that could affect the Tennessee Vols, news pertaining to Rocky Top is relatively light today when it comes to the major sports.

However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to cover. We actually have quite a few stories to get to.

The one football story revolves around a former coach taking another job. We also have a recap of the Lady Vols’ Thursday night game to bring you.

But outside of that, there are two track and field stories and a swimming and diving story to bring you. So we still have tons of other news. Let’s start with the former coach.

Larry Scott to coach Florida tight ends – Robbie Andreu, The Gainesville Sun

Former Tennessee Vols football offensive coordinator Larry Scott has accepted a job as tight ends coach for the Florida Gators. Scott went back to the state of Florida as Steve Stripling, who coached the Vols’ defensive line for four years, went back to Cincinnati.

"The Gators’ new tight ends coach is Larry Scott, a Florida native who played college football at the University of South Florida and has coached at USF and Miami. He replaces Ja’Juan Seider, a holdover from the Jim McElwain staff who was retained by Mullen, but has decided to pursue another coaching opportunity. Seider was named running backs coach at Penn State on Thursday."

Lady Vols defeat Ole Miss – Maria M. Cornelius, GoVols247

The Tennessee Lady Vols finally got back in the win column Thursday night by defeating the Ole Miss Rebels 75-66. However, it was still an ugly win and shows that the team has a lot it needs to fix.

"Tennessee (17-3, 5-2) secured the win over Ole Miss (11-9, 1-6) in front of 9,016 fans who pushed the turnstiles to over one million in program history. The fan who represented No. 1,000,000 received a Lady Vols jersey, basketball and season tickets for 2018-19."

Track and field coach gets new contractPhil Kaplan, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee Vols Track and Field coach Beth Alford-Sullivan received a contract extension through 2022. She has been leading the men’s and women’s programs since June of 2014.

"Alford-Sullivan’s annual salary was $175,000 in 2017, but under the new deal will earn a prorated salary of $190,000 through the end of June. Base pay will increase to $200,000 with raises to $210,000, $220,000 and $230,000 for the final year of the contract."

Track and Field to compete in Bob Pollock Invitational – ClemsonTigers.com

The Clemson Tigers are hosting the Bob Pollock Invitational this weekend. One of the teams competing in it will be the Tennessee Vols.

"The two-day meet features Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, J.C. Smith, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. Four events kick off Friday’s action at 2:30 p.m."

Swimming and Diving to host Florida – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols swimming and diving team will host the Florida Gators Friday. It is their final regular season showing, making this Senior Day for the team.

"Tennessee has nine seniors on the roster, six men and three women. Senior men include: Ryan Coetzee, David Heron, Austin Hirstein, Sam McHugh, Peter John Stevens and Liam Stone. The three Lady Vols seniors include: Katie Armitage, Micah Bohon and Alex Cleveland."
