Men’s basketball SEC Power Rankings for Jan. 29: Vols near the top
Last week: Defeated Vanderbilt Commodores and Iowa State Cyclones
Last rank: 4th
Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Vols continue to be on a roll. And the best thing they are doing right now is running the table against teams they should beat, which can be hard to do at times and is why they are No. 2 in our SEC Power Rankings.
Tennessee put away a Vanderbilt Commodores team last week that is becoming more and more dangerous by the day. Afterward, they managed to dominate an Iowa State Cyclones team in Ames that did manage to score a home win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Just beating Iowa State wasn’t the most impressive thing in the world. But dominating them the way they did was. And as a result, we fell completely justified in bumping them up this high in our rankings. This is a very good team that’s only going to get better.
A team that was picked to finish No. 13 in the SEC is now No. 2 in our power rankings and tied for the third best record overall in the conference. And this comes with only one senior. By the way, they are firmly in the NCAA Tournament with a No. 13 ranking in the RPI due to a No. 7 ranked strength of schedule.
And they are only set to rise in the polls as they have an easy week with two home games against the LSU Tigers and Ole Miss Rebels. They should win both games and be 17-5 and 7-3 to set up for another epic showdown next Tuesday against the Kentucky Wildcats.
