Men’s basketball SEC Power Rankings for Jan. 29: Vols near the top
Last week: Defeated Missouri Tigers and LSU Tigers
Last rank: 3rd
It’s not so much what the Auburn Tigers did as it is what the two teams ahead of them last week, the Florida Gators and Alabama Crimson Tide, failed to do. Both teams suffered bad losses, and that forced us to move the Tigers back up to No. 1 in our SEC Power Rankings.

With the best record in the conference and the best record overall, how could we ignore it? And it’s not like they had any bad wins. After all, despite their slump the Missouri Tigers are still a good team. The LSU Tigers are dangerous.
Auburn beat the brakes off both of those teams, winning the first one by 18 and the next one by 25. As a result, Bruce Pearl’s team is dominating right now and impossible to ignore. They can handle anybody at any time.
Strength of schedule is no longer a question either. The Tigers have a Top 50 strength of schedule that is about to hit the Top 40, legitimizing their stellar record. And that’s why they are No. 6 in the RPI and looking at a potential No. 1 seed if they keep this up. Yes, we uttered the words No. 1 seed.
The best part about the Tigers’ situation is it’s hard to see another loss coming. Two of their next four games are on the road, but they are against the Ole Miss Rebels and Georgia Bulldogs. Meanwhile, they host the Vanderbilt Commodores and Texas A&M Aggies. So they should win all four. And that could do wonders for this team’s prospects going forward. As of now, they are a clear-cut No. 1 in our SEC Power Rankings.
