Tennessee Vols morning report: Pro Bowl, recapping weekend games

A recap of the Tennessee Vols over the weekend and the Pro Bowl from Sunday lead our Volunteers news for Monday, Jan. 29, 2018.

We kick off the final week of January with really a series of recaps. The Tennessee Vols had a lot of appearances in different sports during that time, and that leads our Monday morning report on Rocky Top.

On top of that, there were former Vols who played in the Pro Bowl Sunday. And that’s another recap, as we break down how each of them performed.

As for games Tennessee had over the weekend, the results were a bit mixed. And in basketball, there was really good news and really bad news.

But let’s stick with football for now. As mentioned, we begin by recapping the Pro Bowl.

Three former Vols perform in Pro Bowl – Patrick Brown, GoVols247

Alvin Kamara, Malik Jackson and Jaston Witten all performed in Sunday’s Pro Bowl, which the AFC won. Kamara had 49 yards on eight touches, Witten had two receptions for 16 yards and Jackson had no stats.

"Witten played in his 11th Pro Bowl, while Jackson and Kamara each made their Pro Bowl debuts.The AFC rallied from a 20-3 halftime deficit to win 24-23 on Tennessee Titan Delanie Walker’s 18-yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders with just 1:31 left in the game."

Men’s basketball beats Iowa State – Mike Wilson, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team scored a huge win over the Iowa State Cyclones Saturday. The win was another road win and a Top 100 RPI win for Rick Barnes’s team.

"The No. 21 Vols rode a flurry of 3-pointers and a stifling defensive effort to 68-45 win at Iowa State on Saturday afternoon as part of the Big 12-SEC Challenge.Turner led Tennessee with 20 points, while Daniel chipped in 16 for the Vols (15-5). The duo combined to make nine 3-pointers, as the Vols made 12 as a team."

Lady Vols fall at LSU – Scott Rabalais, The Advocate

The Tennessee Lady Vols suffered another loss, their fourth in six games, Sunday. Holly Warlick’s team fell on the road to the LSU Tigers.

"Now they’re both 5-3 in SEC play, tied for sixth midway through the regular season. LSU is 13-6 overall, Tennessee 17-4."

Women’s tennis wins doubleheader – UTSports

The Tennessee women’s tennis team defeated Memphis and ETSU in a doubleheader Saturday. They have another doubleheader at home Feb. 2.

"The Tennessee women’s team won eight of nine completed singles matches and wrapped up a doubleheader sweep to improve to 4-0 at Goodfriend Tennis Center on Saturday.The Lady Vols notched a 6-1 win over Memphis in the opening match and went on to top ETSU, 4-0, later in the day."

Men’s tennis falls twice at ITA Kickoff Weekend – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols men’s tennis team lost 4-3 to the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday and 4-1 to the Texas Longhorns Sunday at ITA Kickoff Weekend at Texas Tennis Center. It was the first two losses of the season for the team.

"The Vols (7-2) dropped the doubles point and then four of six first sets as Texas (4-1) collected the three singles points needed to clinch victory."

Vols score wins, records at Bob Pollack Invitational – Daily Beacon

The Tennessee Vols track & field program scored five victories at the Bob Pollack invitational over the weekend. Meanwhile, performers Zach Long and Georgios Korakidis made history for the program.

"Long’s winning time of 7:59.15 in the men’s 3,000 meters at the Bob Pollack Invitational notched a new school record, passing a former mark that had stood for 28 years. He is the first Tennessee athlete to finish under an eight-minute time in the indoor 3K.Korakidis, meanwhile, set a freshman record for the Vols, throwing 19.66 meters in the weight throw. The previous mark, 19.62 meters, was set by Cameron Brown in 2013."
