Last week: Defeated Ole Miss Rebels and Vanderbilt Commodores

Last rank: 1st

The Auburn Tigers also played an easy stretch last week. But Bruce Pearl’s team continues to dominate everybody, and they certainly are still the best team in the conference. As a result, they remain No. 1 in our SEC Power Rankings.

  • At this point, given their amazing run, it’s now time to stop talking about their standing in the SEC. Auburn is now in a fight to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. With a 21-2 record overall and 9-1 conference record, they certainly deserve it.

There is no shame in Auburn’s only conference loss, which was by five points on the road against the Alabama Crimson Tide. These guys are one of the elite teams in all of college basketball, and it’s hard to ignore them.

Right now, they tower over the rest of the conference. While the SEC is extremely deep with very good teams, Auburn carries the torch as the one elite team. And the RPI is finally taking notice. Despite the No. 40 ranked strength of schedule, they are No. 5 in the ratings due to their amazing record.

A game against the resurgent Texas A&M Aggies and then road game against the Georgia Bulldogs this week, though, will both be a bit tough if they’re looking to maintain their chance at a No. 1 seed. They need to win both games, and then they have a home game against the Kentucky Wildcats to truly determine if they can earn it. Winning all three puts them in great shape.
