Last week: Defeated Florida Gators; Lost to Mississippi State Bulldogs

Last rank: 13th

The Georgia Bulldogs maybe didn’t deserve such a huge spike in our SEC Power Rankings. But as we said, these teams are so even that even the slightest change of the wind could dramatically shift where everybody stands. That happened this week.

  • Georgia scored a huge 12-point home win over the Florida Gators. Sure, they lost to the Mississippi State Bulldogs on the road the following Saturday. But a split was enough to dramatically jump Mark Fox’s team from their No. 13 ranking last week.

They have still lost four of five, which shows you how much things can change. But at 13-9 and 4-6 in the SEC, they are one of the 4-6 conference teams to get a win last week. The three teams they are ahead that are 4-6 didn’t get a win last week. So that makes things pretty clear.

Georgia still has work to do to reach the NCAA Tournament, though. Right now, they have the No. 59 ranked RPI due to their No. 47 ranked strength of schedule with their 13-9 overall record. That’s on the bubble and likely out of the Big Dance.

One nice winning streak puts them in. This week, they have a dramatic turn of opposites. They first visit the Vanderbilt Commodores in what is a more dangerous game than they might realize. Following that, the Dawgs host the Auburn Tigers.

Winning both gives them a ton of breathing room. A split would seem likely. But losing both games is very plausible too. So watch out.
