Tennessee Vols morning report: Barnett wins Super Bowl, recruiting visits

Former Tennessee Vols defensive end Derek Barnett making a huge play to win the Super Bowl leads our Volunteers news for Monday, Feb. 5, 2018.

Happy post-Super Bowl Monday. We’ve got a huge week of Tennessee Vols news to bring you. That includes recapping the NFL season, looking ahead to National Signing Day Wednesday, and a huge collection of basketball games.

Our news on Rocky Top for today includes a major focus on all of these topics. And it makes for a very heavy Monday.

We’ve got basketball games and a weekend closing out the NFL season both being relevant for the Tennessee Vols. Oh, there were also a collection of recruiting visits we must touch on.

But let’s start with the story everybody is talking about Monday. It deals with the Super Bowl.

Derek Barnett clinches game in Super Bowl – Phil Kaplan, Knoxville News Sentinel

Former Tennessee Vols defensive end Derek Barnett was part of the key play to win the Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday. Barnett recovered the Tom Brady fumble late in the game with his team up 38-33, which likely was the difference.

"Barnett, the  rookie from the University of Tennessee and former Brentwood Academy star, recovered a fumble following defensive end Brandon Graham’s strip-sack of quarterback Tom Brady with 2:09 left in the fourth quarter.“BG made the play to win it,” Barnett told reporters after the game. “It was a good bounce. Right into my hands.”"

Tennessee football prospects enjoy visit – Blake Morgan, SEC Country

The Tennessee Vols hosted multiple recruits over the weekend. And for their top two visits, four-star Emmit Gooden and five-star Isaac Taylor-Stuart, it looks like things went very well.

"Tennessee hosted a few Class of 2018 prospects during the weekend. There were also plenty of elite Class of 2019 prospects on campus, too."

Alvin Kamara wins Rookie of the Year – Jeremy Bergman, NFL.com

While former Tennessee Vols end Derek Barnett won a Super Bowl as a rookie, another rookie from Knoxville won another huge award. Alvin Kamara captured Rookie of the Year with the New Orleans Saints.

"Kamara (28 votes) beat out Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt (21) and Texans QB Deshaun Watson(1).Drafted in the third round out of Tennessee, Kamara was the fifth running back taken behind Leonard Fournette, Christian McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook and Joe Mixon."

Tennessee Lady Vols defeat Vanderbilt – UTSports

Despite struggling at times, the Tennessee Lady Vols pulled away from the Vanderbilt Commodores in the fourth quarter. The win improved Tennessee to 19-4 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Mercedes Russell and Jaime Nared were the reasons for the win.

"Russell logged her 41st career double-double and 11th this season, scoring 20 points while reeling in 11 rebounds. Additionally, she recorded a career-high four steals.Nared, a finalist for the Cheryl Miller award, tallied her ninth double-double of the season and 18th of her career, pouring in 16 points and grabbing five rebounds in the final five minutes of the game."

Tennessee Vols defeat Ole Miss Rebels – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

The Tennessee men’s basketball team defeated the Ole Miss Rebels Saturday night. It was the fifth straight win for Rick Barnes and Co.

"Five Vols scored in double-figures, led by 17 points each from Lamonte Turner and Grant Williams, in a wire-to-wire 94-61 rout of the Rebels in front of an announced crowd of 18,316 at Thompson-Boling Arena.Tennessee (17-5, 7-3 SEC), now with eight wins over the last nine games, got a double-double from Admiral Schofield, who finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds after briefly leaving the game in the second half with what looked like an ankle injury."

Mercedes Russell a finalist for Lisa Leslie Award – NCAA.com

Mercedes Russell is one of 10 finalist for this year’s Lisa Leslie Award. The award goes to the nation’s top center in women’s college basketball.

"Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalists to determine the Naismith Starting 5 at www.hoophallawards.com.The winner of the 2018 Lisa Leslie Center Award will be announced during ESPN2’s telecast of the national semifinal games in the 2018 NCAA Women’s Final Four in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, March 30."
