Women’s SEC Power Rankings Feb. 6: Lady Vols move back up
Last week: Defeated Texas A&M Aggies and Vanderbilt Commodores
Last rank: 7th
Holly Warlick’s team was falling apart after that first loss of the year in overtime to the Texas A&M Aggies. That loss launched a skid where they dropped an outing four of six times they took the court. But this past week, they were able to get back on track.
And the return to form was enough for us to move them up in our SEC Power Rankings for the week. The Tennessee Lady Vols didn’t impress anybody by beating the Vanderbilt Commodores late in the fourth quarter.
But dominating the Texas A&M Aggies was worthy of respect. That combined with the way a few other things fell was enough for us to move them up three spots, back to No. 4. Tennessee is now 19-4 and 7-3 in the SEC, and the record now comes with the No. 18 ranked strength of schedule and the No. 11 ranked RPI. As a result, we can now safely say this is a very good team with some major quality wins.
Beating Vanderbilt got them back on their first multi-game winning streak since they were undefeated. That has to count for something as well. They proved they weren’t in the top of the top class during that skid, but this team still now has shown it was good.
Now, they begin a mini-tough test. They’ll first face the Arkansas Razorbacks on the road. But three of their final five games are against teams in the Top 25 of the RPI, including the game after Arkansas, which is against the next team in our SEC Power Rankings.
