The Tennessee Vols softball season opener and a recap of National Signing Day lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018.

Well, the recruiting season for 2018 is over. Now it’s time for Tennessee Vols football to look ahead to the spring and focus on next year’s recruiting class. There’s lots of looking ahead with that sport.

Speaking of looking ahead, another sport is set to begin this weekend. And we have a preview of a game tonight to bring you.

Simply put, there’s a lot on the slate here in this second Thursday in February. But let’s start with the big news of yesterday.

Vols complete National Signing Day – Blake Toppmeyer, Knoxville News Sentinel

It was a very disappointing National Signing Day for Tennessee football. After a splash in the early signing period, Jeremy Pruitt had to deal with a wave of top prospects committing somewhere other than Rocky Top. He also suffered two decommitments. Nevertheless, the Vols had a Top 25 class, so it wasn’t all bad.

"Jeremy Pruitt handled his first National Signing Day as a head coach Wednesday, as he continues to build his first recruiting class at Tennessee.The Vols signed 14 players during the December signing window."

Tennessee softball begins season at Kajikawa Classic – admin.thesundevils.com

The Tennessee Vols softball team will begin its season in the Kajikawa Classic Thursday night. Tennessee will face the Boise State Broncos Thursday at 3 p.m. and the Arizona State Sun Devils, the team hosting the event, later that night at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, they will face the Western Michigan Broncos and the San Jose State Spartans. They will face UC Davis and the Utah Utes Saturday. All games will be televised on Flo-SoftballTennessee is ranked No. 11 and No. 12 in the two key preseason polls to start the year.

"The tournament will feature 76 games played by 28 teams over four days at five separate fields, continuing the tradition of being one of the largest preseason tournaments in the nation."

Tennessee Lady Vols visit ArkansasUTSports

The Tennessee women’s basketball team will visit the Arkansas Razorbacks Thursday night. Ranked No. 11 in the country, Tennessee got back on track with two wins last week. Holly Warlick’s team will try to continue that streak in Fayetteville.

"The Lady Vols are coming off a road win on Sunday, scoring 31 points in the fourth quarter to gain a season sweep and extend a series win streak vs. Vanderbilt to nine games, 74-64.Arkansas, meanwhile, has won only twice in its last nine games, but it halted a four-game losing skid on Sunday with a breakthrough road win at Alabama, 74-66."
