Last week: Lost to Auburn Tigers; Defeated Texas A&M Aggies

Last rank: 2nd

Well, the LSU Tigers got hit with a major dose of reality. They dropped a huge loss to the Auburn Tigers, one of the worst teams in the league at the time. And losing to a team in the lower tier of the conference, given how vast the differences are this year between the top and bottom halves, is enough for us to significantly drop you in our SEC Power Rankings.

As a result, LSU is now down to No. 7. They are the worst of the top half SEC teams at this moment. Now, to be fair, they did follow that up with a win over the Texas A&M Aggies. But beating a team at home by two points is not enough to offset all the damage done from that Auburn loss.

We were questioning before their hot streak if Nikki Fargas’s team was actually among the top half of the SEC. That loss raised lots of questions. And they have a lot to answer for in closing out the season due to it.

Still, this team is a lock for the NCAA Tournament. With four quality wins, a 16-7 record overall, an 8-4 SEC record and a No. 26 ranked strength of schedule, the LSU Tigers remain a Top 25 RPI team overall. So they’re safe.

But they have some more to prove if they are going to move up anymore. A home game against the Ole Miss Rebels coming up is at least a sure win. But then they have road games against the Arkansas Razorbacks and South Carolina Gamecocks, and let’s face it, both are questions at this point.
