Tennessee Lady Vols still in 3-seed position in bracketology projections
The Tennessee Lady Vols are still looking at a No. 3 seed in the women’s basketball bracketology projections despite the Volunteers losing their last two.
Apparently two bad losses in a row, one of which was to the lowly ranked Alabama Crimson Tide at home, is not enough to hurt the Tennessee Lady Vols in their NCAA Tournament position. In fact, it doesn’t really drop them at all.
Right now, there’s almost a consensus to have Holly Warlick’s team as a three-seed. Like the men, they have maintained their spot compared to a week ago. And like the men, it doesn’t match their ranking in both polls, which in the women’s case is now at No. 15 and No. 14.
Perhaps it’s their RPI ranking, which is now No. 10 thanks to their No. 9 ranked strength of schedule. That’s due to a very good loss to the Missouri Tigers on Sunday and still having a 21-6 record.
However, that loss to Alabama should have meant something. But the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee itself revealed the Tennessee Lady Vols as the No. 12 overall seed Tuesday in its current Top 16. That does fall in line with a No. 3 seed, even if they’re barely falling there.
Other sites agreed. Charlie Creme of ESPN has Tennessee as a No. 3 seed as well, playing in the region with the Mississippi State Bulldogs as the No. 1 seed. In his bracket, the Lady Vols would host the first weekend and open up against American with the winner of that game set to face the winner of Green Bay and Florida Gulf Coast.
CollegeSportsMadness.com has the Tennessee Lady Vols as a No. 3 seed in the bracket with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as the No. 1 seed. In that projection, they would host the Belmont Bruins in the first round with the winner of that game set to face the winner of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
But fellow FanSided site SummittHoops, in a probably more accurate projection of the Lady Vols, has less faith in the program. They have Tennessee as a No. 4 seed. That’s still good enough to host the first weekend, but it is a lower seed.
In that projection, Tennessee would face Belmont as well in the first round. Then the winner of that would play the winner of Iowa and South Dakota State. They would still be in the bracket with Notre Dame.
With two games left, Tennessee could still move up even further considering the love they’re already getting. After all, their regular season finale is a home game against the South Carolina Gamecocks fully healthy. Before that, though, they need to take care of the Florida Gators on the road. And although that should be an easy win, you never know with this team.
