Tennessee Vols morning report: Another QB commit, SEC Tournament

Another quarterback commitment to the Tennessee Vols and updates on the SEC Tournament lead our Volunteers news for Thursday, March 8, 2018.

One more day before March Madness begins for the Tennessee Vols. Surprisingly, there’s not a ton of news related to them in that sport to bring you.

However, there is over-arching news related to the sport for us to discuss. But it doesn’t lead our updates on Rocky Top for this morning. Instead, we have another football commitment to bring you.

There’s also an unfortunate injury for the football team that we need to bring up. But let’s start with the surprising commitment.

Georgia QB commits to Vols as preferred walk-on – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols added another quarterback to their roster for 2018. Former Troy commitment Jacob Cendoya committed to Tennessee as a preferred walk-on.

"Cendoya was named to Georgia’s Class A all-state team last year after throwing for 2,887 yards and 35 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,219 yards and 16 touchdowns.He’s the second Class of 2018 quarterback to commit to the Vols as a preferred walk-on, joining Bart Harris of Belton (Mo.) High School."

SEC Tournament to continue – SEC Sports

The SEC Tournament began on Wednesday, and it will continue onto Thursday despite the Tennessee Vols not playing until Friday. They will face the winner of Mississippi State and LSU. On Wednesday, the Georgia Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores and Ole Miss Rebels respectively to advance.

Butch Jones at Alabama pro day – Blake Toppmeyer, Knoxville News Sentinel

Former Tennessee football coach Butch Jones was at Alabama’s pro day Wednesday, a week after reports surfaced that the Crimson Tide were considering bringing him on as an offensive analyst.

"“I don’t know where that (stands),” Saban told reporters Wednesday after pro day, when asked whether Alabama has hired Jones as an analyst. “We have issues that we have to go through to be able to hire somebody from another school, and I haven’t gotten a report on where that is right now. We are interested in him being a part of our staff.”"

Chance Hall to miss spring – Austin Price, Volquest

Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Chance Hall will miss spring practice due to injury. Hall missed the entire 2017 season and had surgery this week.

"Hall started 13 times at right tackle during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, but he also missed multiple games each year because of injuries. He sat out the entire 2017 season that saw Tennessee finish 4-8 and struggle along the offensive line due to injury and depth problems."

Tennessee baseball loses to James Madison – WHSV

After dominating JMU on Tuesday, the Tennessee Vols were smacked around Wednesday in a 21-2 loss. They dropped to 8-6 overall.

"Sophomore Kevin Kelly earned the win on the night (1-1), keeping the Vols hitless until the fourth inning with two outs. Kelly delivered a career-high 6.2 innings with five strikeouts, matching his season high, and gave up two runs on four hits.Freshman Josh Jones tallied career-highs in hits (3), runs scored (3) and RBI (2) while fellow freshman Conor Hartigan also recorded career-highs in hits (3), runs scored (3) and added a career-high tying one RBI. Sophomore Matt Dipasupil racked up three hits and two RBI, both career highs, along with a run scored and a walk."

Parker Henry wins postgraduate scholarship – UTSports

Tennessee football specialist Parker Henry earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. He becomes the sixth Tennessee player to earn such an award.

"The former Beech Senior High School quarterback plans to continue his education at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management and pursue a career in investment banking.He joins Peyton Manning (1997), Tim Irwin (1980), Mike Mauck (1977), Tim Priest (1971) and Don Dembo (1971) as Tennessee’s recipients of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship."
