The Tennessee Vols reaching a settlement with John Currie and their second football spring practice lead the Volunteers updates for Friday, March 23, 2018.

Happy Friday to everybody. Beautiful spring weather is trying to get here, but the the hideous winter weather is putting up a major fight. Meanwhile, turmoil that surrounded the Tennessee Vols athletic department hit the surface again.

And that leads our updates on Rocky Top for today. That’s right, we have to rehash the issues that put the university in the public eye back in November.

On top of that, football practices are still going on. So we cover that as well along with previews for two other sports. And a recap of one sport also made the list.

Simply put, there’s a lot of news to kick off the first weekend of “spring.” Let’s start with the major athletic news.

The Tennessee Vols reached an amicable settlement with athletic director John Currie Thursday. With the settlement came the public release of document, including emails and text messages, that make him look pretty bad. He trashed UT fans before trying to make the Greg Schiano hire, he had a planned public supporter in Dan Wolken, and blatantly disregarded university orders at one time.

"The university released Currie’s text messages Thursday in response to a records request submitted in December by USA TODAY NETWORK – Tennessee."

The Tennessee Vols held their second spring practice under head coach Jeremy Pruitt and his staff on Thursday. Pruitt spent time mostly watching the defensive backs, which is his speciality as a coach anyway.

"It’s no surprise that Tennessee’s defensive coaches are taking a hands-on approach early during spring camp. The Vols are transitioning from a base 4-3 scheme they ran under former coach Butch Jones to a 3-4 look. New defense means new positions, especially for the front seven."

Tennessee baseball hosts Alabama – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols baseball team will host the Alabama Crimson Tide for a three-game series over the weekend. With a 13-9 record, Tennessee will be looking to rebound from its midweek loss to ETSU.

"The Vols and Crimson Tide begin their series on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network + (WatchESPN). Both teams will be looking for their first SEC series win after going 1-2 in their opening series of conference play last weekend."

Tennessee softball visits South Carolina – UTSports

With a 30-1 record, the red-hot Tennessee Lady Vols will visit the South Carolina Gamecocks over the weekend. Tennessee comes in ranked No. 2 in the nation, while South Carolina is ranked No. 16.

"The Lady Vols (30-1, 3-0 SEC) return to conference play after going 6-0 at the Bank of Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawai’i."
