Tennessee Vols morning report: Spring encouraging Jeremy Pruitt

Spring is here, but as we roll on towards the end of March and the Final Four, it looks like most of the country will either see cold weather or rainy weather. Welcome to a month of teases before the real warm weather finally hits. Amidst all of that, the Tennessee Vols have a ton of news going on.

Most spring sports on Rocky Top are in full swing, and as we get set to bring you today’s news, recaps of them dominate our page. There were a ton of events that happened this weekend.

But on top of that, Tennessee football had multiple bits of news. And we start today’s morning report with those things.

Jeremy Pruitt starting to like team – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Tennessee Vols football head coach is beginning to like his team. After their third spring practice on Saturday, he talked about the quarterbacks progressing and noted that he likes parts of the team and the way they’re developing. Here’s a bit of what he said.

"“I’m really starting to like this team, being around these guys. I sense of a bunch of guys that are hungry and maybe have a chip on their shoulder — not all of ‘em, not all of ‘em, but maybe enough of ‘em, and maybe we can make it where it’s contagious.”"

Tennessee football adds JuCo CB – Mike Wilson, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Tennessee Vols added a commitment from junior college cornerback Kenneth George Jr. Saturday night. George announced his commitment on Twitter.

"The 5-foot-11, 190-pound George gives the Vols three defensive backs in their 2018 class.The Lafayette, La., native made 27 tackles and two interceptions in 11 games last season for Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas."

Tennessee baseball sweeps Alabama – Louis Fernandez, WBIR

The Tennessee Vols baseball team swept the Alabama Crimson Tide over the weekend after winning both games in Sunday’s doubleheader. Tennessee has now improved to 16-9 on the year and 4-2 in the SEC, while Alabama fell to 16-9 and 1-5 in the SEC.

"The 3-game series sweep of Alabama is the first SEC sweep for Tennessee since May 2015 against Mississippi State, this coming off of the first road win against a ranked opponent since April 2017. It’s also the first time since 2014 UT baseball has swept multiple 3-game series in the same season. A whole lot of firsts for first year head coach Tony Vitello."

South Carolina sweeps Tennessee softball – Marc Whiteman, WATE

The No. 15 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks swept the Tennessee Lady Vols in Columbia over the weekend. They’ll look to rebound this weekend at home against the No. 10 ranked Georgia Bulldogs.

"Despite owning the best start in team history as they packed for Columbia, No. 2 Tennessee (30-4, 3-3 SEC) left South Carolina with a lot to think on the heels of three straight losses. It’s the first time the Lady Vols have been swept since 2016."

Swimmer Zeng wins platform event – Swimming World Magazine online

Zhipeng (Colin) Zeng won his second national platform title Saturday on the final night of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

"Tennessee’s Colin Zeng narrowly won the platform event by scoring a 466.35 while Texas freshman Jordan Windle posted a score of 460.45, for second."

Men’s tennis defeats Georgia – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols men’s tennis team improved to 16-5 on the year and 5-2 in the SEC after defeating the Georgia Bulldogs Sunday. It was their first win against the Dawgs since 2011.

"Sophomore Scott Jones held off four match points on Court 5 and fellow sophomore Luca Wiedenmann won in three sets on Court 6 to clinch a 4-3 road victory for No. 25 Tennessee over No. 14 Georgia on Sunday at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts."

Women’s tennis falls to Kentucky – UTSports

The Tennessee Lady Vols tennis team fell to 13-7 and remained winless in the SEC at 0-7 after losing to the No. 20 ranked Kentucky Wildcats 4-1 on the road Sunday.

"Despite winning three first sets, UT was unable to find its groove in singles, as the Wildcats swept the top four courts to win the match."
