Newcomer of the Year – Rennia Davis

Anastasia Hayes was the best player off the bench, and Evina Westbrook was the quarterback of the Tennessee Lady vols this year. Both players were freshmen. But neither was the best new comer for the Tennessee Lady Vols.

That award belongs with Rennia Davis. Now, she had a terrible assist to turnover ratio too. But Davis wasn’t supposed to be a point guard or distributor. She was a scorer who could play close to the basket and fill in for Jaime Nared at times.

The result was an average of 12 points, over seven and a half rebounds and one steal per game while also shooting 32.9 percent from the three-point line and 48.3 percent from the field overall. She was a highly efficient scorer as a freshman, also shooting74 percent from the free throw line.

Davis was a great all around scorer and could be very aggressive too. As a result, she has an incredibly bright future in numerous ways.

Westbrook could have gotten this award, but as the primary distributor she desperately needed to have fewer turnovers. If she cut those in half she would have at least joined Davis here. However, because she had that issue, we had to give this award to Davis solely. She played her role better as a freshman.

Next year, with Nared and Mercedes Russell gone, Davis figures to immediately step in and be the top scorer for the Tennessee Lady Vols. So she’s set to emerge into a potential superstar. She took the first step this year, and if she can improve in all areas, her potential becomes very exciting.
