Tennessee Basketball: 5 Things to Address this Offseason
2. Consistency from Bowden and Bone
There is no question how vital Jordan Bowden and Jordan Bone are to Tennessee. Good guard play can take teams a long way. And Villanova is yet another great example. Sophomore guard, Donte DiVincenzo scored a game-high 31 points to help Nova to 79-62 National Championship win.
Junior guard, Jalen Brunson led the Wildcats in scoring at a pace of 18.9 points per game and was the guy Villanova wanted to have the ball in his hands when the game was on the line.
Both Bowden and Bone showed signs of really high play in some games but lacked consistency for most of the season. Bone had big games against Arkansas and Auburn as he scored 21 points and 18 points. At times during those games, he was getting any shot he wanted and no one the court could stop him going to the rack.
Bone can be that type of player for the Vols next season in every single game. His first step is as explosive as any other player in the country but lacked the “want to” it seemed. Like the games against Missouri and South Carolina where he only scored three points combined.
Bowden was the same way when it came to consistency. He started the season setting the nets on fire. At one point during the season, he was shooting over 50 percent from the beyond the arc. 50 percent!
He had games against Mercer where he scored 18 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the three. And, in the game at Wake Forest, Bowden was a perfect 5-for-5 from the three-point line. Vol fans knew that type of play was there for Bowden, and that’s what made his 1-for-10 during the SEC Tournament so disappointing.
