The Tennessee Vols’ first football scrimmage of the spring under Jeremy Pruitt leads our Volunteers news for Monday, April 9, 2018.

It’s the second Monday in April, and spring is slowly but surely fighting its way through as winter weather just refuses to go away in some parts. Just like the spring weather, the Tennessee Vols football program is fighting through adversity to get to a new level under Jeremy Pruitt.

A major part of their first spring practice took shape on Saturday, and our recap of that is what leads our morning report. We also have news across four other spring sports to bring you.

Meanwhile, a former player’s actions over the weekend is also in the mix. Simply put, there’s lots of news for today. We’ll start, though, with the football updates.

Tennessee football holds first scrimmage Kane O’Neill, WJHL

In cold and rainy weather, the Tennessee Vols held their first scrimmage under Jeremy Pruitt Saturday. Pruitt was very critical of the team’s play in this one, specifically criticizing the body language. Here’s a bit of what he said about it.

"“I could’ve turned my head when the ball was being snapped and not watched the play, and then look back around, and I could’ve told you what happened without looking at the down and distance, all based off body language. That’s not a good thing… One of the most important things in any sport is to be able to keep your poise.”"

Forme Tennessee Lady Vols star Tamika Catchings was in Knoxville over the weekend to conduct a free basketball camp. Over a dozen campers among the 50 there are hearing-impaired, something that Catchings suffered herself growing up.

"Catchings didn’t just lend her name to the camp. She arrived an hour early, met with organizers and volunteers and did a walk-through to demonstrate how the camp would unfold. Two deaf interpreters also worked the camp to provide sign language of Catchings’ instructions."

Tennessee baseball wins one vs. No. 1 Florida – Mike Wilson, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Tennessee Vols baseball team got blown out by the No. 1 Florida Gators at home Friday night 22-6. However, they took one of two in a double-header Sunday, losing the first one 6-4 in extra innings and winning the second one 6-4. The Vols are now 19-14 and 5-7 in the SEC, while Florida is 28-6 and 9-3 in the SEC.

"“You win as a team and lose as a team,” Vols coach Tony Vitello said. “You also respond as a team and I think our guys did a good job of shaking that (first game) off and coming out.”"
