More detailed updates on Tennessee Vols football spring practice and the WNBA Draft lead our Volunteers news for Thursday, April 12, 2018.

Finally! After spring officially being here for nearly a month, the weather is starting to reflect it. Temperatures reaching the 70s and sunny weather today across the Eastern portion of the United States is showing that. And it really gives the sense of spring for the Tennessee Vols.

So as we get set to bring you our morning report on Rocky Top, our focus is going to be on spring practice in football. However, that’s not the only sport that is making news for this morning in Knoxville on what figures to be a beautiful day.

A baseball recap is also in the works, as is a preview of a major event related to the Tennessee Lady Vols tonight. So we’ll get to both of those things. But let’s start with a bit more detailed updates on football.

Vols defensive line adjusts to new system – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols are installing a new defensive system under Jeremy Pruitt, and the switch to the 3-4 system and new defensive line coach Tracy Rocker has been fine for the defensive line according to new reports. Kyle Phillips and Shy Tuttle both spoke about that and what it’s like now playing for Rocker.

"Tennessee senior defensive end Kyle Phillips said Wednesday that the transition to new defensive line coach Tracy Rocker has been “a good change” for the Vols’ defensive linemen, and senior defensive tackle Shy Tuttle said adjusting to Rocker hasn’t “really been hard.”"

Two Lady Vols in WNBA Draft – Dan Fleser, Knoxville News Sentinel

The WNBA Draft is scheduled for tonight, and two former Lady Vols will be looking to see where they’re picked: Mercedes Russell and Jaime Nared. However, neither will be in attendance for the event at Nike’s New York City headquarters.

"EPSN2 will carry the first round, beginning at 7 p.m. Rounds two and three will be shown on ESPNU, beginning at 8 p.m."

Tennessee baseball defeats UT Martin – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols obliterated the UT Martin Skyhawks Wednesday 15-1 to sweep them in a midweek two-game series after winning Tuesday 9-0. With the win, Tennessee moves to 21-14 on the year, while UT Martin falls to 5-25.

"Sophomore lefty Will Heflin was fantastic in his first-career start, allowing just two hits and no runs in 5.1 innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Volunteers’ bullpen was also lights out, allowing just one run and one hit in 3.2 innings.Benito Santiago had another solid day at the plate with three hits while tying career highs with three runs and four RBI. Pete Derkay, Andre Lipcius and Cal Gobbell all had multi-RBI games as well to help the Big Orange reach double-digit runs for the fifth time this season."
