Tennessee Vols morning report: Volscars, alcohol at SEC stadiums

The Tennessee Vols athletic awards along with potential alcohol at SEC games lead the Volunteers news for Tuesday, April 17, 2018.

Spring weather continues to tease us, and we’re still having a difficult time getting the best read on the Tennessee Vols football team after two scrimmages. But today’s morning report, believe it or not, does not include news surrounding spring ball.

Instead, we have news on separate fronts about honors different athletes received. Also, there’s an interesting topic to discuss about policy matters in football games.

And finally, we do have a preview of a game happening tonight in a spring sport to bring you. So the spring season is still on. But let’s start with one of the awards.

Athletes recognized at Volscars – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols held their Volscars Monday night in downtown Knoxville. Tennessee men’s basketball took home three awards, dominating the night, while no other sport captured more than one award. This was the 12th annual Volscars award show.

"Vols basketball junior forward Grant Williams and softball star Meghan Gregg — the reigning SEC Player on the Year in their respective sports — were named Mr. and Ms. Tennessee at the banquet, while Vols basketball junior forward Admiral Schofield won the men’s “I Will Give My All” Award."

SEC discussing alcohol sales – Blake Toppmeyer, Knoxville News Sentinel

The SEC has been debating about the rules of alcohol sales at their stadiums for a year now. On Monday, commissioner Greg Sankey said he expects the dialogue to continue. The debate is about whether or not to allow alcohol sales in general seating areas.

"Currently, fans wishing to sip an alcoholic beverage in general seating areas of SEC venues are out of luck.SEC rules prevent alcoholic beverages from being sold or consumed in stadiums except for private or leased areas of the stadium, such as premium seating areas where alcohol is permitted."

Three Vols named to NFF Hampshire Honor Society – UTSports

Three Tennessee Vols were named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society. Brett Kendrick, Parker Henry and Jakob Johnson were announced as members last week. They join 10 other Vols to win the award, which began recognizing athletes in 2007.

"Qualifications to join the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study, being a starter or significant contributor during the 2017 season and meeting all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements."

Tennessee baseball visits ETSU – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols baseball team will visit the East Tennessee State University Bucs on Tuesday for to close out a four-game road trip. Tennessee enters the midweek series with a 21-17 record overall. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

"The Volunteers will look to snap a three-game skid after being swept at No. 19 LSU over the weekend. UT has been very successful in midweek games this season with a 9-2 record."
